Support Brain Health With These 4 Supplements

AUTHOR: CASSIDY, FNP-C, MSN

The brain naturally goes through structural and functional changes as we age. The brain starts to shrink in volume after the age of 25, which leads to cognitive decline. Lifestyle, diet, and stress all play roles in our cognitive function.

Most of us don’t eat as healthy as we should, but even with a healthy diet it’s nearly impossible to get enough nutrients from food alone to impact our brain. According to the USDA, one bowl of spinach in 1953 has the same nutritional value as over 43 bowls of spinach today…that is an 84% loss of nutrition! At Central Wellness, we provide supplements to help support brain health and these are some of our favorites.

Magnesium L Threonate

One supplement that is great for brain function is magnesium specifically Magnesium L Threonate. Magnesium is an important cofactor for more than 300 enzymes involved in energy metabolism and the biosynthesis process. If you’re like me, the supplement isle can be a bit overwhelming! There are so many kinds of magnesium however most of the magnesium compounds can’t cross the blood brain barrier and have gastrointestinal side effects. Magnesium L Threonate is the only form of magnesium shown to cross the blood-brain barrier which increases magnesium concentration in the brain. Raising magnesium concentration in the brain leads to enhanced learning abilities, working memory and short- and long-term memory.

Directions: Take three capsules in divided doses daily. One in the morning and two capsules two hours before sleep.

Advanced Calm

Calm is the next supplement. Calm is made with L-theanine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Calm works by increasing levels of GABA in brain which act as a natural calming agent. When GABA levels increase in the brain, excitability decreases, and relaxation begins. GABA supports restful sleep by affecting the serotonin levels during the sleeping cycle. Both the GABA and L-theanine work together and provide quality of sleep through there calming effects. L-theanine comes from green tea leaves. It is highly bioavailable and crosses the blood brain barrier which helps reduce stress, promote relaxation, and promotes mental clarity.

Directions: Take 2 capsules daily.

CoQ10

CoQ10 is another supplement great for brain health. Our CoQ10 has vitamin E and vitamin A which are great for cardiovascular support and immune function. CoQ10 is found in metabolically demanding tissues throughout our body such as the heart, skeletal muscles, kidney, liver and brain. CoQ10 is a molecule produced by the body that helps manufacture energy. CoQ10 promotes blood flow through our cardiovascular system by preserving the activity of nitric oxide which is responsible for dilating the blood vessels which helps support healthy blood pressure.

Directions: Take 1 softgel daily.

Advanced Omega

Omega 3 fatty acids play an essential role in brain health, development, and function. They are considered essential because your body doesn’t produce them internally meaning you need to consume these fatty acids from food or supplements. EPA-DHA are known as the some of the strongest natural promoters of a healthy heart, immune, joints, skin, and cognitive support. EPA and DHA are mostly found in fish which unfortunately eating large amounts of fish is a growing health concern due to the exposure of metals that accumulate in the marine ecosystems. EPA and DHA are important components of neuron membrane phospholipids which support cognitive function. Research suggests a combined intake of EPA and DHA to equal 1000-3000 mg per day to support health.

Directions: Take 2 softgels daily.
