Dry Skin In the winter

Dry skin — especially on our faces — can be a huge crush to our confidence. It’s also uncomfortable to experience itchiness and other side effects that come with it. With this in mind, we’re covering how to combat dry skin to keep it glowing all year round.

Key takeaways from this article

  • How to treat dry skin on your face
  • Tips to avoid sugar for happier skin
  • Best treatment options for dry skin
  • Recommended products to keep skin hydrated

What causes dry skin?

We wish there was a simple answer to this, but in reality, dry skin is caused by so many different factors. Your skin type, allergies, stress, diet, environment, and weather are just a few of the variables.

Here in Montana, many of our clients experience dry skin from our dry climate. We usually have very little humidity, no matter what season it is. Our dry winters are definitely the biggest culprit of dry skin on the face, so if you’re in a climate similar to ours, consider this as a factor.

If you’re suffering from severe dry skin, it’s always best to consult professional help to find solutions. No matter where you live, our Board Certified Clinicians at Central Wellness can help!

How to treat dry skin on your face

To start treating dry skin on your face, you’ll want to start with your skincare routine. Are you doing the same routine in both the summer and winter? If the answer is yes, it’s likely time to adjust your skincare routine to meet the needs of your current season.

Avoid hot showers

As tempting as piping hot showers are in the dead of winter, it’s best to avoid hot water to maintain your skin’s natural moisture — especially on your face! So take the temperature down a little bit and keep water at a lukewarm temperature. (Trust us, your skin will thank you!)

Sun Protection

It’s important to wear SPF all year round — yes, EVEN in the winter! Wearing SPF helps protect your skin from unnecessary UV damage to contribute to healthier skin overall.

Of course, SPF is important on your face, but it’s also important to cover areas of skin that are often overlooked, including your hands, feet, chest, and neck. Covering these areas protects your skin during sneaky activities that expose us to the sun, like driving in your car, sitting next to a window, or being outside on a rainy day.

Exfoliate

Use your favorite facial scrub to exfoliate 3-4 times a week to get rid of dead skin cells for a radiant and hydrated glow, especially in the winter! Need help looking for a great exfoliator? Scroll to the bottom to check out our favorite products!

Limit Sugars

Limiting your sugar is essential when it comes to your skin’s overall health. Nowadays, added sugar is found in almost every processed food. Too much sugar in our diets can lead to an imbalance in our skin’s natural processes.

One example is the effect on our skin’s collagen production. Sugar can slow down or lead to a loss of collagen. Since our skin needs collagen to maintain healthy elasticity, too much sugar can prevent your youthful glow

You might have no problem avoiding sugar in your daily life, but when it comes to the holiday season, it gets harder. Here’s a bonus mini-guide to avoid sugar during the holidays (and still enjoy them!)

Five Tips to Avoid Sugar and Still Enjoy the Holidays

Pumpkin pie, Christmas cookies, peppermint mochas, oh my! With treats around every corner, how can you eat less sugar and still enjoy the festivities?

  1. Set a goal. You’ll have more motivation to make healthy choices this holiday season when you commit yourself. Maybe that’s allowing yourself one treat a day, staying away from processed sugars, or avoiding all sugary drinks — start with a goal that makes you feel empowered.
  2. Allow small indulgences. There’s nothing less jolly than a restrictive diet for the holidays. When you allow small indulgences, you’ll be less tempted to backpedal into a free-for-all.
  3. Choose “no sugar days.” No sugar days are a great way to balance out small indulgences and stay on track! Maybe for you, this means skipping sugar every other day or even once a week. Choose what works best for you!
  4. Drink a glass of water. Among the endless list of benefits that come with staying hydrated, drinking a glass of water before mealtime helps promote mindful eating and triggers a satisfied stomach sooner.
  5. Pack healthy snacks. The holidays often bring hours of traveling to be near loved ones. Plan ahead this year with healthy snacks for the road to avoid those last-minute drive-through runs you always regret.
