Is Ultherapy the Answer for Your Aging Skin?

Heard the news? Simple sound waves can lift and tighten the skin with no surgery. Get the inside story.
Changes in skin tone and appearance can be one of the most visible signs of aging. A lowered eyebrow line, sagging under the chin and loose skin on the neck and décolletage are telltale signs that the years are creeping up.
In the past, invasive surgical facelifts were the only way to smooth out these imperfections. However, if you’re not ready for surgery, there’s now an alternate procedure that lifts and naturally tightens the skin without a minute of downtime.
Ultherapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses ultrasound energy to promote tightening and lifting of the skin on the chest, neck, under the chin and around the eyebrows. “It treats the deep foundational layer addressed in cosmetic surgery and is a great alternative to a surgical treatment,” says Kacie Robertus, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner at Central Wellness Medical and Aesthetic Spa, Billings, Montana. “It’s a simple procedure that improves the appearance of aging skin for both women and men.”
FDA-cleared Ultherapy uses tried-and-true ultrasound to tighten the skin. The sound energy bypasses the skin’s surface to target deep structural tissue, creating heat that stimulates the production of firming collagen.
“Ultherapy gently stimulates collagen production and strengthens the foundation of skin,” says Robertus. “It works from the inside out to lift and tighten skin.”
Collagen is a protein responsible for the skin’s firmness, suppleness and elasticity.
Skin sags over time for several reasons. As you age, skin loses the collagen and elastin that once made it look supple and smooth. Facial muscles weaken and become a victim of gravity. Exposure to the sun can cause the skin to lose more elasticity as ultraviolet rays break down collagen and elastin. Also, if you’ve lost weight over the years, especially a significant amount of weight, the skin may sag.
Ultherapy helps lift aging skin. “You may see some results initially, but the ultimate skin tightening results will appear over three to six months after treatment,” says Robertus. “It all depends on how fast your body generates collagen.”
The length of the procedure depends on the areas treated. For example, a face and neck procedure typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, while a chest treatment may only take about 30 minutes. “Most patients need only one treatment. However, touch-up treatments can help patients keep pace with the body’s natural aging,” says Robertus.
Unlike facelifts, which can cause swelling and bruising and entail weeks of recovery, Ultherapy has minimal, temporary side effects. Skin may appear flushed at first, with slight swelling, tingling or tenderness that disappears within a few hours. Less common post-procedure effects may include temporary bruising or numbness. After an Ultherapy treatment, you may resume normal activities immediately with no special post-treatment measures.
