As we age the body slowly produces less of the vital hormones it needs to have a long
healthy life. As modern medicine continues to give the body
the ability to live longer and longer, natural hormones will help you feel healthy and
energetic throughout your life.

Benefits of Bioidentical Hormones May Include

When hormones such as progesterone and estrogen are balanced it allows the brain to send signals of calmness and contentment. When hormones decline, women can experience increased anxiety, depression, irritability and anger. Regaining balance can allow you to be a happier healthier you.

Estrogen allows the bones to absorb important nutrients that keep them strong. When estrogen declines, the bones may not be able to take in the needed calcium causing the bones to become brittle and porous, which may lead to osteoporosis.

As we age, it seems more and more difficult to get rid of the unwanted pounds. This may be due to the decline of Progesterone and Estrogen. Progesterone is a natural diuretic, and when it is deficient, women may feel bloated and retain water. An estrogen deficiency may cause the body to hold onto unwanted body fat. When estrogen and progesterone are balance it may lead to weight loss.

Hormones are responsible for signaling the hypothalamus, which is the body’s temperature control center. When hormones decline, body temperature may fluctuate to produce hot flashes and night sweats. Optimizing your hormones will allow the body to better regulate its temperature.

As our hormones decline it seems harder and harder to sleep. We toss and turn and then are wide awake at 3am. The hypothalamus is also responsible for the body’s cycles, and when hormones are unbalanced, our sleep cycles are too. Regulating hormones may help you be able to fall and stay asleep more easily.

Estrogen allows the skin to form collagen, which increases elasticity giving a more feminine and youthful appearance. It also helps hair and nails to grow and the breasts to stay perkier. A lack of estrogen can cause women going through hormone decline to have wrinkling skin, sagging breasts, and dull hair and nails.

Many women with hormone decline complain about vaginal dryness, low libido, and inability to climax. Bio-identical replacement therapy can help women to desire and enjoy sexual activity more fully.

I As women move past their childbearing years they move into perimenopause and then menopause. This process can take up to 10 years. During this time woman experience life changing symptoms and unbalance hormones. When the reproductive system stops ovulating and menstrual cycles disappear the physical results can be challenging. Common symptoms women experience are weight gain, insomnia, low sex drive, lack of energy, depression, irritability, and migraines. These unpleasant side effects are due to lack of important hormones that your body is producing very little of or not at all. Because of modern medicine keeping us alive longer, women suffer can suffer for 40+ years. Bioidentical hormones can help replace the hormones your body is not producing helping you to feel healthy and energetic again.

Estrogen is primarily the female sex hormone and is responsible for the regulation of the reproductive system. Balanced Estrogen also helps improve:

  • Muscle Tone
  • Skin laxity
  • Hair texture
  • Sex Drive
  • Cardiovascular Health
  • Bone strength
  • Brain Functioning
  • Mood swings
  • Hot Flashes
  • Quality Sleep
  • Vaginal dryness, itching, and burning

Progesterone is produced after women ovulate, and declines rapidly as women go through menopause. Progesterone partners with estrogen working systematically to balance each other. When they are functioning synergistically they promote optimal female health including:

  • Bone growth
  • Healthy heart
  • Sense of contentment & wellbeing
  • Controlled water- retention

Testosterone is usually thought of as the male hormone, but it is a vital sex hormone in both males and females. It plays an important role in puberty, sexual desire and function. When optimized testosterone can help with:

  • Sex drive
  • Energy
  • Bone density
  • Muscle tone & strength
  • Happier disposition
  • Decreased blood pressure & cholesterol
  • Reduced body fat

DHEA is a powerful antioxidant with age-resisting capabilities. It is often called “the mother of all hormones” because it is the building block from which our bodies make estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone hormones. DHEA promotes the following:

  • Immune response
  • Metabolism
  • Sex Drive
  • Cognitive functions
  • Memory
  • Emotional Stability
  • Decreased risk of cancer and Heart Disease

Pregnenolone is an essential building block for DHEA. It is also shown to help prevent mental decline due to aging.

  • Memory
  • Mental Clarity

Melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm and is vital to healthy sleep cycles. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant and is one of the greatest free radical destroyers, which may help to protect the body against cancer. Melatonin helps improve:

  • Sleep
  • Immune System

Thyroid hormone is critical for almost every bodily function. It regulates your body’s metabolism, temperature, and nervous system. Optimal levels help sustain energy as well as provide mental clarity and focus. In addition, thyroid hormone plays an important role in the growth and strength of hair, skin and nails. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits low on the front of the neck below your Adam’s apple. The thyroid is responsible for regulating the body’s metabolism. It controls your heart rate and how fast or slow your body burns calories. There are many different types of thyroid disorders; hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer, goiter, and thyroid nodules.

Common underactive thyroid symptoms (hypothyroidism):

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of Motivation
  • Hair loss
  • Dry Skin
  • Weight Gain
  • Feeling cold consistently

Common overactive thyroid symptoms (hyperthyroidism):

  • Weight loss
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces an inadequate amount of essential hormones. It is one of the most common diseases in the United States affecting as many as 11 million adults and children. Though it is most common in females over the age of 60. Symptoms initially may be mild and are frequently misdiagnosed for other illnesses. Usually a person with hypothyroidism will experience at least one of these symptoms, but often a combination of several will be present.

  • Weight Gain
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen eyelids or puffiness in the face
  • Depression
  • Cold intolerance
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Lack of memory or ability to concentrate
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Dryness or thinning of the hair
  • Decreased sweating
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Slowed heart rate
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Numb or tingling hands

“I don’t feel well, but when I got my thyroid test it came back normal.”

As you read down the list of symptoms you say to yourself, “Several of these symptoms describe me, so how can my thyroid test come back normal”? Normal or not, you still don’t feel well and are no closer to finding an answer. Most doctors run a test looking only at your TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone) levels which are produced by the pituitary gland. This test specifically looks at your thyroxine or T4, which is considerably less active then its counterpart T3. Many scientific studies have shown the TSH to be an unreliable indicator of the thyroid function. When we run a thyroid test at Central Wellness we evaluate your free T3 and free T4. This allows us to see the entire picture of the thyroid. We can make sure your thyroid antibodies, thyroglobulin antibodies, thyroid peroxidase antibodies, and the absorption of T3 are all working properly.

What are my treatment options?

After you receive your thyroid test results we will create a tailored plan to get your body the adequate T3 & T4 to function properly. There are many forms of thyroid medication. We prescribe only the natural form of thyroid medication because synthetic medicines such as Levothyroxin™ and Synthroid™ only contain T4. In many cases of thyroid disease the body does not convert T4 into T3 which the body needs to work correctly. Natural thyroid medication like Armour Thyroid™, Nature-Throid™, Westhroid™, and others contain both T3 and T4. Also depending on your test results we may prescribe liothyronine in addition, which is only T3.

To optimize the thyroid gland is a very slow process and it takes at least four weeks to see a difference in each dosage. We will test your blood every 4-6 weeks until we can get the correct dosage and your symptoms have been relieved.

Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid produces more thyroid hormones than the body needs. Having too much thyroid hormone makes your body speed up causing unpleasant symptoms. The leading cause of Hyperthyroidism is Grave’s Disease. Some of the symptoms you may be experiencing are:

  • Nervousness or Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Heat intolerance
  • Difficulty Sleeping
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Increased Sweating
  • Diarrhea or frequent bowel movements
  • Hair loss
  • Weight loss
  • Hand Tremors
  • Shaky feeling or trembling inside
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Foggy memory
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Muscle weakness

What testing is necessary?

A blood test is done to measure TSH, T4, T3, Free T4 and free T3, as well as Thyroid antibodies and reverse T3 are usually done for a full thyroid evaluation.  Iodine uptake (RAIU) is a test of thyroid function. It measures how much radioactive iodine is taken up by the thyroid gland in a certain time period. Also called Thyroid Scan or Nuclear Scan, it is done to find the cause of hyperthyroidism.

Why do I have hyperthyroidism?

There are many reasons or causes underlying the condition of hyperthyroidism. Commonly, Graves’ disease, Thyroid nodules, benign thyroid tumors or even some medications can cause hyperthyroidism. Post-partum thyroiditis is also seen. Graves’s disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks the thyroid causing the thyroid to overproduce the thyroid hormone.

What are my treatment options?

At Central Wellness we do not currently treat hyperthyroidism. If diagnosed with hyperthyroidism we will refer you to the appropriate doctor to further help you.
