Hand Washing 101

It’s almost summer and that means warmer temperatures and longer days. It’s usually not a time of year to worry about a virus such as the flu or even the common cold, but in fact the flu and the common cold can run rampant with the warmer weather. And that makes it imperative to continue to wash your hands properly and also sanitize when needed. But all that washing and sanitizing can lead to dry skin.
There are products to help, and proper times at which these products are most useful and effective. Here are a few tips to keep healthy throughout the remainder of the late-winter, early-spring sickness season, and a few to keep your skin looking its absolute best.

Hand Washing 101

Remember to keep your hands washed with warm water and soap. Scrub your hands thoroughly, although don’t scrub too roughly or you could possibly abrade the skin’s surface; damaged skin can develop infection. Then rinse your hands thoroughly beneath warm running water. There are also times when you are out and about in public and it is impossible or impractical to get to a restroom or sink to wash your hands.
That’s where hand sanitizers come in handy (hand sanitizers are notorious for drying out the skin, which also makes it important to bring along other skin care products to keep from drying out the skin—more on that in a moment).
Every time you wash, using soap or hand sanitizer (these rules apply to the whole body, so remember that they also apply post-shower) your skin’s drying out. It’s unfortunate—although absolutely necessary to keep clean and to limit the chance of contracting illness—but there are ways to prevent or at least limit the damage done. Most hand sanitizers are alcohol-based, and these ingredients can both irritate and dry out the skin. It’s important if you carry along hand sanitizer, or if you use one of the pumps conveniently placed in the lobbies of businesses and medical facilities, that you counter the irritation/drying out with a quality moisturizer.
