BOTOX Myths Exposed

Botox, which is often used to smooth out the wrinkles in your face, is something that has received a lot of unfair stigma over the years. As a result, there are many myths about Botox that one should be aware of. If you are considering this type of procedure, please be aware of some of these:

Myth #1: Botox is dangerous and unsafe.

This isn’t true, especially considering the fact that Botox first received FDA approval to treat certain medical conditions in 1989. Botox was okayed for cosmetic use in 2002. Literally millions of people have used Botox safely and effectively, and they are able to do so because Botox is always in the hands of a qualified medical professional.

Myth #2: Botox can give you botulism.

There have been many stories propagated out there where people have been led to believe that Botox can give them botulism. Part of the reason this myth has developed is because Botox is, in fact, derived from botulinum. However, Botox is located in an isolated segment of the bacteria, and it cannot give anyone botulism.

Myth #3: Botox can make my face look “frozen” or expressionless.

Absolutely not! Because Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles at the point of injection, it will prevents such blemishes as crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and smile lines. Botox only affects these muscles and will not play a role in any other facial muscles. Thus, you will still have many different facial muscles.

Myth #4: You cannot become immune to Botox.

Unfortunately, this is untrue as well. Various studies have shown that repeated Botox injections can cause the user to develop antibodies that will either lessen the effectiveness of the Botox or even hinder it completely. Discuss these effects with your doctor before beginning a Botox regimen.

Myth #5: Botox only works for wrinkles.

Nope. It also works for chronic migraine, overactive bladder, limb spasticity, and overactive underarm sweating. Interestingly enough, doctors only discovered the cosmetic use of Botox by accident; it was originally approved for various eye treatments.
